This is neat. I built something exactly like this back in 2005 or so when I was at Yahoo mainly as an experiment to learn his XHR worked. It was a bookmarklet that you could click on when visiting a site and you'd be able to chat with other visitors. No accounts, no history. Worked well internally with a few visitors, but ran out of screen space when it crossed about 20 people to a site.
